Public residences

  • CROUS residences

The CROUS (Centre Régional des Œuvres Universitaires et Scolaires) is a public institution linked to the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. As part of its remit, it manages student residences, which are public and subsidised by the State.

These residences are the most sought-after accommodation for students because of their low rents and eligibility for housing benefit. However, demand for CROUS accommodation far outstrips supply.

To apply for accommodation in a CROUS residence, you need to complete a Dossier Social Étudiant (DSE).

CROUS and first-time international students

EM Normandie and CROUS Normandie have formed a partnership to welcome international students to the Caen and Le Havre campuses.

How does it work?

In June/July, The HUB department sends the procedure to registered international students to organise the allocation of CROUS accommodation.

Please note: places are limited.

  • Young workers’ hostels

If you are a student aged between 16 and 30, you can be accommodated in a young workers’ hostel (FJT) or youth accommodation.

Housing search platforms

If you can’t find a place in a student residence, renting accommodation from private individuals or estate agents is a good option.

However, be careful when looking for accommodation on the internet, particularly on websites that put people in touch with each other: there are plenty of scams out there.

Read the advice from Studapart and “La carte des Colocs” to avoid scams.

Our partners:

Studapart gives you easy access to accommodation anywhere in France for a minimum period of one month. All the procedures are carried out on a single plateform.

– To get started, click on “Espace Locataire” and register with your EM Normandie login details.

Do you have any questions? Contact Studapart by telephone on +33 1 80 92 64 01 or by email booking@studapart.com.

Tip: if you are interested in student residences, it is preferable to rent directly from the residences, without going through the Studapart platform, so as not to multiply the fees payable.

Looking for a flat to share? “La carte des Colocs” is a good solution. Launched in 2013, this independent website aims to put an end to the domination of paid portals in the online flatsharing sector.

Housing subsidies

  • Assistance from the Caisse d’Allocations Familiales (CAF)

You may be eligible for assistance from the CAF to pay your rent if you meet the following 4 conditions:

– You are French or a foreign national with a valid residence permit

– You rent decent accommodation

– You are not related to the owner of the property you are renting

– Your income (salary, grant, etc.) is below certain ceilings.

If you are sharing, you are still eligible for housing benefit. The rent used to calculate the assistance is divided according to the number of flatmates. Each flatmate must make their own application for housing benefit.

Calculate the amount of assistance you could receive here.

  • Bail Mobilité: short-term rental with no deposit required

Website

This is a lease for furnished accommodation only, intended for a so-called “temporary” public. The major advantage is that the tenant is not required to pay a deposit to the landlord.

Beware of the duration of the mobility lease:

– Concluded for a minimum of 1 month and a maximum of 10 months

– Non-renewable and non-renewable

– Can be modified once by amendment, but the total duration may not exceed 10 months

– When the lease ends, if the tenant and landlord sign a new lease for the same property, the new lease must be a “classic” residential lease.

Insuring your home

It is compulsory to insure your accommodation, whether you have found it with a private individual or a student residence. This insurance protects you and your home in the event of a claim (fire, water damage, natural disaster, etc.).
